2016-08-09 | Led Zeppelin Loses Fight for Legal Fees in "Stairway..." Case | Led Zeppelin may have won the copyright war over its creation of "Stairway to Heaven," but it lost its battle Monday (Aug. 8) to recoup nearly $800,000 in defense fees.
Judge R. Gary Klausner ruled that the band's songwriters, record label and associated companies were not entitled to legal fees and other costs because the copyright lawsuit against them was not frivolous.
A Los Angeles federal jury in June found that guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant did not lift the introduction of "Stairway" from an obscure instrumental written by the late Randy Wolfe, founder of the band Spirit (USA).
The trust for Wolfe, better known as Randy California, claimed Page & Plant were familiar with his work and stole a riff from the short tune "Taurus" that repeats throughout the first two minutes of their classic rock anthem.
Wolfe's trust had won been seeking credit for the song and millions of dollars in damages. But jurors found the tunes were not similar enough for Led Zeppelin to have violated the copyright protection of "Taurus."
Attorneys for Led Zeppelin sought legal and other fees totaling $793,000 because insurance companies would not cover such an old claim.
They argued that the lawsuit was frivolous, it was brought to shake down the rock stars for money and that awarding defense costs would deter future old and meritless copyright claims.
Klausner rejected those arguments, saying he had found the lawsuit had enough merit to go to trial and there was no evidence the plaintiff "harbored nefarious motives."
Klausner acknowledged that Led Zeppelin's lawyers succeeded at trial and had shown a right to compensation. But in the end it was up to his discretion, and he sided with Wolfe's trustee. Source: BillBoard |

2007-12-19 | Led Zep tour could be on | Led Zeppelin are apparently planning to tour next year despite rumours that frontman Robert Plant's solo commitments would scupper full band gigs.
As previously reported on Orange, Plant's 2008 tour with US country star Alison Krauss threw rumours of a full Zeppelin tour into doubt.
But now a source tells the Daily Star: "Robert was overwhelmed by the attention but he wants the fuss to die down before doing more stuff with the band."
There are even rumours that the veteran reunited rockers could play Cardiff's Millenium Stadium.
The source explained: "It'll (a potential tour) be towards the end of the year now." Source: Ananova |
2007-12-13 | Led Zep sales soar | Sales of Led Zeppelin records have gone through the roof after their comeback gig on Monday (December 10).
The ageing rocker's gig at London's O2 Arena proved to be a massive hit, and has led to a 500% increase in sales of their back catalogue, according to HMV figures.
A HMV spokesperson explained to the NME: "This demonstrates the enduring appeal of Led Zeppelin as the definitive rock band.
"Their music is now connecting with a whole new generation of fans, who are discovering its brilliance for the first time."
Such was the impact of their gig that Mothership - the band's recent compilation album - experienced a 50% sales boost on the day after the gig outselling any other album.
The group are now expected to hit the road again with rumours of a three night stand in New York lined up for next year. Source: Ananova |
2007-11-22 | Led Zeppelin could tour again | Led Zeppelin could be going on a full tour next year.
Veteran rockers Zep were assumed to only be performing at one massive reunion show, but according to '80s hitmakers The Cult, Robert Plant and friends could be hitting the road again.
Cult frontman Ian Astbury told the Daily Star: "We'll be back next year, we're opening for a band you may have heard of."
Ian revealed: "The name starts with an L and has a Z in it."
Unless The Cult are gigging with wacky Icelandic children's TV jokers Lazytown, Zep fans may have more chances to see their idols.

2004-06-21 | Knight to shock fans with new rock sound | Beverley Knight says fans are going to be shocked by her new rock sound after taking inspiration from Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin.
The R'n'B star releases her new single Come As You Are this week, after an absence of nearly two years. Her fourth album Affirmation is due out on June 28.
"I thought, 'I'm a Midlander'. It's the home of Iron Maiden and Led Zepplin. I grew up with rock music so it was time to bring that into my music," she said.
"I'm excited because the album has a very different kind of sound to what people are expecting. I thought 'aha, you don't know what's coming'."
Beverley says she's looking forward to getting back on the road and is planning a tour later this year.
"I will be doing the V Festival. It's going to be great especially as Massive Attack and N.E.R.D are on the bill. Then, I'm doing a one-off show at Somerset House on August 7 which will be astonishing. It's all going on."
Beverley says that although she wants her music to dominate every corner of the globe, she isn't planning on becoming the next J-Lo.
"I can't act for anything, I can act up, but I think going to leave the mass media stardom to those who can do it. I'm a musician from beginning to end.
"I'm aspiring to be someone who has a sound to her name rather than being in a genre or a box." Source: Ananova |
